Gorgeous Pencil Drawings by Winnie Truong

Winnie Truong
Winnie Truong is a talented artist and illustrator based in Toronto, Canada. She was born in 1988. Truong works in pencil crayons on paper to produce large scale portraits that challenge our ideas of beauty and discomfort. Winnie received her BFA in Painting and Drawing from Ontario College of Art and Design. She has been portrayed extensively in art publications, blogs, magazines etc. Winnie has exhibited internationally in galleries across Toronto, LA, and Copenhagen and in New York where she was featured at VOLTA, NY Art Fair.

In recent years Truong has developed a body of work that generates a dialogue between beauty, hair and the drawn line through large-scale coloured pencil drawings on paper. Focusing on the subject of hair, she imagines it’s new possibilities beyond ornament and towards living objects and environments. While Truong’s work captures the tensions between hair, beauty and the grotesque, her work also expresses personal feelings of ambivalence towards femininity and the female form. At the core of her art practice, she views her drawings as an equal balance of visual and visceral experience; a final product on paper and an immersive physical activity that takes place in the artist’s studio during production.
